The honest answer to “best free invoice generator” is boring: it depends on what you need. Some people need invoice history with no cap set by the tool (browser storage limits apply). Some need withholding-tax support. Some just want a clean PDF without handing over an email address. We compared five free invoicing tools. We used Innvoic, InvoiceFast, Invoza and InvoiceOwl’s free generator directly in October 2026; we did not test billfy. The table below holds only what we could verify firsthand. Blank cells mean we couldn’t confirm it, not that the feature is missing. If a cell matters to your decision, check the tool’s own site.

Features and limits above were checked on each provider’s own pages in October 2026, and InvoiceOwl’s free generator plus its PDF footer, and Innvoic’s document count, were re-verified by anonymous live tests on 24 Oct 2026. Providers change their plans; if a row looks out of date, tell us via the contact page and we’ll re-check it.

Dashes (—) mean we couldn’t verify the fact ourselves, not that the feature is absent. Tools change; if a cell matters to your decision, confirm it on the tool’s own site before choosing.

A few things the table doesn’t capture, verified during our testing:

  • Innvoic also includes tips, shipping, rounding, partial payments (amount paid → balance due), payment QR codes in the preview for PayPal.Me, Venmo, Cash App and UPI; bank details as text on the downloaded invoice, CSV export of invoice history, 6 document types (invoice, estimate, quote, proforma, receipt, credit note), and share-by-link. Everything runs in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
  • freeinvoicefast.com is the closest rival on breadth — 44 URLs in its sitemap (checked Oct 20, 2026) including an 11-guide content hub, regional template pages, and its own comparison table. Its tool supports 13 currencies and share-by-link.
  • getinvoza.com has a 40-page site — worth knowing if you issue credit notes.
  • billfy.online has the most distinctive feature set of the group: withholding-tax (WHT) support, bulk invoice generation, and an embeddable invoice widget.
  • invoiceowl.com splits in two: its free generator at /invoice-generator/ needs no signup — anonymous PDF download verified 24 Oct 2026 — while its paid app, with save/send/track, is account-based. Use the generator for a quick PDF; expect an account only if you move to the app.

We are not claiming any ranking position for these tools or for this page. Search results change constantly, and the “best” tool is the one whose limits you never hit.

Why “no watermark” claims deserve scrutiny

This is buyer advice, not an attack on any tool, and it applies to the whole category. Watermarks on free invoice generators come in two flavors. The obvious kind: a logo stamped across the page. The sneaky kind: a small “Created with [Tool]” line in the footer of an otherwise clean PDF. Several tools advertise “no watermark” while shipping the second kind. We verified one ourselves: getinvoza.com’s PDFs print “Created with Invoza” despite the site’s “unwatermarked” claim.

How to protect yourself, with any tool:

  1. Generate a test invoice and download the actual PDF. Don’t trust the on-screen preview — some tools only add the branding at PDF time.
  2. Check the footer and margins, not just the middle of the page. That’s where “created with” lines hide.
  3. Check the print preview once too.
  4. Read the pricing page for the word “branding.” “Remove branding” listed as a paid feature means the free tier has branding — that’s the honest version of the same disclosure.

Innvoic’s PDFs download with a single one-line footer credit: “Generated free with Innvoic – no signup, no watermark.” No logo, no watermark across the page, no “created with” stamp. We think that’s the honest meaning of “no watermark” — the file is clean except for that one credit line.

What to look for in a free invoice generator

Beyond the table, here is the checklist we used. It separates genuinely useful free generators from lead magnets for a paid product.

Document types. Invoicing isn’t one document. Look for estimates and quotes (pre-sale), proforma invoices (commitment without a tax invoice), tax invoices (the formal, numbered record), and receipts (post-payment proof). A tool that only does one of these will strand you mid-workflow.

Tax handling. Per-line tax rates matter more than a single invoice-level tax field — different items are often taxed differently. If you deal with GST, VAT, or withholding tax (WHT), check that the tool lets you set your own rates and labels. No free generator we’ve seen automates government e-invoicing or filing, and you should distrust any that claims to.

Numbering and records. Some countries require gap-free sequences; US rules generally don’t, but a clean sequence helps your records. Check your local rules. Invoice history with no cap set by the tool (browser storage limits apply) and a searchable client database turn a one-off generator into a usable system.

Getting paid. The invoice is step one; collection is the job. Payment terms presets (Net 15/30/60), due dates, late-fee clauses in the terms, partial-payment tracking with balance-due math, and ready-made reminder emails (gentle → firm → final) are the features that actually shorten payment cycles. Payment QR codes in the preview (UPI, PayPal.Me, Venmo) remove friction for clients paying by phone.

Money math details. Tips, shipping charges, rounding, invoice-level discounts, and multi-currency formatting (35 currencies vs 13 is a real gap if you bill internationally) are where simple tools break down on real invoices.

Privacy model. Ask where your data goes. Browser-local tools (everything stored in your device’s local storage, nothing uploaded) need no signup by design. Cloud tools need accounts by design — that’s a fair trade only if you’re getting sync and collaboration in return.

Export and portability. PDF download is table stakes. CSV export of your invoice history means your records aren’t trapped in someone else’s system.

Run any tool against this list and the marketing claims mostly sort themselves out.

Working in the US specifically? Our US invoice generator page covers the US angle in depth — payment methods, 1099 rules, and sales-tax basics.

Is Innvoic really free with no watermark?

Yes. Invoices and clients with no cap set by the tool (browser storage limits apply), 35 currencies, reminders, QR codes in the preview, CSV export, all free. No signup. Downloaded PDFs carry a single one-line footer credit (“Generated free with Innvoic – no signup, no watermark.”) and nothing else. We checked actual downloads, not just the preview.

Do I need to create an account to use Innvoic?

No. Everything runs in your browser, and your invoices, clients, and settings live in your device’s local storage. There is no account system, so there is nothing to sign up for and nothing of yours gets uploaded.

How does Innvoic compare to freeinvoicefast or Invoza?

All three are usable free tools; the right one depends on your needs. In our testing, Innvoic led on currencies (35 vs 13), history and clients with no cap set by the tool (browser storage limits apply), per-line tax and discount, plus invoice-level discounts, and payment reminders. Invoza’s “unwatermarked” PDFs actually print “Created with Invoza.” freeinvoicefast has the deepest content library of the three. Features change, so confirm anything critical on each site.

Can I create GST or VAT invoices with Innvoic?

You can set your own GST, VAT, or WHT rates per line item and label the invoice accordingly. That covers what most freelancers and small businesses need. Innvoic doesn’t automate government e-invoicing, filing, or registration, and it isn’t tax advice. For regulated e-invoicing (India’s IRP system, for example), use the government’s official portal alongside it.
